Philadelphia – Contiki Day 1

This morning we had to be up early to check out of our New York hotel and meet up with the Contiki group by 7.30am. We met our coach driver Frank, who loaded up our suitcases and then we jumped on the coach for our 2 hour drive to our first destination, Philadelphia.

Our trip manager James (Brody Jenner lookalike lol) spent the entire 2 hour drive through New Jersey talking to us about the trip. Once we arrived in Philadelphia, our first stop was the famous steps from the Rocky movies. I had to take the cliche Rocky pose photo!

I did take a photo of the Philly skyline from the top of the steps.

After our stop here, it was into downtown Philadelphia for our included walking tour with our ‘historic’ tour guide. Philadelphia has so much history – it’s basically the birthplace of America and the Declaration of Independence was signed here.  The tour was pretty interesting and was a nice way to see some of the historic sites in Philadelphia.

We had free time after the tour and since it was lunchtime, a few of us decided that when in Philly, we gotta try a Philly Cheesesteak. We headed to Jim’s Steaks and let me say, my first cheesesteak was great!

One of the optionals today was a tour of Eastern State Penitentiary. After chilling our for a bit by the Delaware River, we headed back to the coach to take us to the prison. This was America’s first penitentiary and is where Al Capone was imprisioned. It was a really interesting tour – Al Capone has the most luxurious cell, with fine furniture and rugs. It was pretty interesting, especially after I had seen Alcatraz last year.

After the tour it was finally time to check in to our hotel. The hotel is really nice! I had a nap and spoke with mum and dad before we met up for our included dinner with Contiki. A few people have gone out but we have a huge day tomorrow so I opted for a semi-early night so came back to the hotel. Tomorrow we are heading to Washington DC!
